How to Become a Firefighter

Firefighting is one of the most dangerous jobs in the entire world and firefighters the world over should be thanked anytime they risk their lives by running into a burning building. If you were interested in and know that it is a very rigorous training process unless you are ready, it is best left to the professionals.

If you are truly determined to become a firefighter, we have outlined all of the steps that you will need to follow below. The process is lengthy and tedious, but if you go into the program with your wits about you, there’s no reason why you can’t come out a professional firefighters.

  • The first thing you’re going to have to do is make sure that you’ve completed your high school education. Obtain at least a GED or equivalent diploma from high school before you even think of applying to Fire College. The number of firefighters with college degrees varies greatly, but there’s no requirement for receiving a bachelor’s degree from a university.
  • Before you’re allowed to enroll in the firefighter training program, you must first pass a physical fitness test. Before you even consider trying to pass the test, make sure you’re in peak physical condition as the test is known to be incredibly difficult. Passage of the test will allow you to apply to the fire college. The test involves things like running and climbing, so you’re going to want to get an all around good level of fitness, not just built up abs.
  • Once you’ve made it past all of the rigorous tests to make it into fire college, it’s recommended that you expand your skills a little. Not only is it necessary that you keep your body in shape, it’s important to have a strong knowledge base to build your fire skills around. Try and take as many CPR and health classes as you can because being a firefighter is about being the total package. Many of the calls that are made to firehouses these days are in relation to health issues, not actual fires.
  • Next on the list is the application process to become part of the firefighting training program. The entrance exams into fire college aren’t tough and cover basic things like an SAT would alongside questions to judge your moral character. Most people breeze through this step.
  • Once you’ve made it into the firehouse, training begins. Training can last anywhere between three to six months depending on the firehouse. Ask your firehouse about what’s involved with the training process and how long it will be. Every firehouse is different and only they can answer your questions. Firefighting training covers all of the firefighting techniques and skills you’ll need to have in the field. It’s a mixture of classroom instruction and field work. At the end you will have to pass an exam to prove that you’re well prepared for the job.

  • You may think that once you’ve passed the tests you are ready to become a firefighter. That’s not quite true. Once you’ve completed your coursework, there is a period of probation that all firefighters must go through. This probation period varies from firehouse to firehouse, and usually involves you just tagging along to real emergencies to see what everything is like. It’s all well and good to perform well in training courses, but if you can’t put your skills to work in the real world, you’re no use to a firefighting team. The probation period helps ease you into the idea of being a firefighter and what’s involved.

How to Become a Driving Instructor

If you think you’re a pretty good driver and could make a living teaching others the rules of the road and how to drive their cars, becoming a driving instructor may be the job for you. Becoming an instructor isn’t a difficult process, but there are different requirements from state to state that must be met before you can be on your way teaching other students.

The following steps to becoming a driving instructor are generalized as much as possible so they can help a number of people, but that doesn’t mean that all of the numbers and steps listed are the same for your state. Check with your state’s DMV once you’ve started the process to make sure you’re on the right track.

  • The first thing you’re obviously going to have to do is get a driver’s license for the type of vehicle you’re looking to instruct in. Most people get a standard driver’s license at the age of 16 in the United States, so this first step shouldn’t be too difficult for anybody to complete. One caveat that sometimes trips people up is that you’re not allowed to have had your license revoked in the past two years before applying to become an instructor. Meaning that if you just got a new driver’s license after having your old one revoked, you won’t be eligible to teach others how to drive.
  • With your license in hand, most states require that you have had your driver’s license for at least two years before applying to be an instructor. This is to make sure you’re had adequate time to learn the type of vehicle you’ll be teaching. In addition to having the license for two years, you must also be at least 21 years of age. There’s really no “reason” that 21 is the limit and some states may be different, but 21 is the minimum age requirement to obtain your instructor license.

  • We hinted at it in the last step, but the next part of the whole process is to get your instructor’s license. A driving instructor’s license can be gotten from your local DMV and will require additional tests on top of the ones you took to get your license in the first place. It’s recommended that you take driving instructor courses approved by your state in order to better prepare yourself for the tests. The tests have more difficult written examinations and driving tests than the ones you took to get your original license.
  • Upon passage of your driving exams you will obtain an instructor’s driving license. This license will allow you to teach others how to drive the type of vehicle you got a license for. You can take your license to a driving instructor agency and now apply for a job. Different driving instruction academies have different requirements for their drivers, so it’s a good idea to check with an agency before you apply for a job. The two year minimum of experience is only necessary to get your instructor’s license. Most driving instruction facilities will require that you have a few more years experience on top of that and have a clean driving record. Different places have different requirements, so before you jump for joy after you get your license from the DMV; remember that you may have a long way to go before you can actually teach others how to drive.

How to Become a Tax Preparer

Taxes aren’t easy to do year in and year out. Many people opt to hire a tax preparer to do all of the dirty work for them so that they’re free to do other things. If you like working with numbers though and would like to earn extra income every year when tax season rolls around, consider becoming a tax preparer. Tax preparation isn’t really a full time job, so you can’t expect to quit your regular job to prepare taxes every March and April, but you can stand to make a few thousand dollars if you play your cards right.

Loosen has outlined the steps you need to follow to become a tax preparer in your state. This article won’t follow the traditional numbered steps you may be used to. Because becoming a tax preparer is very different from other careers, we’re going to skip the numbered system and use just plain paragraph form to get it all across.

The ultimate goal out of anything you do in preparation to become a tax preparer is to gain enough experience and training to actually help people with their taxes. Some states require licensing while others do not. To get the ball rolling on your tax preparation career, there are two different training options you can consider.

Training courses are offered at many different locations and it’s important that you pick the right tax preparation courses to not only fulfill your educational needs, but also fit in your schedule. Many of the tax preparation companies around the country (think H&R Block) offer free courses every year to people wanting to start their own tax preparation businesses. The alternative to classroom teaching is to do all of your training online.

If you elect to go through a tax preparation company for your training, here’s how it’ll work. The programs generally last between nine and twelve weeks and will give you all of the know-how you need to prepare taxes. They’ll tell you what software to buy and how to use it, as well as give you some pointers for heading out on your own. Why do they do this all for free? At the end of the courses one of two things will happen.

They will either ask you to join their team full time to make money during tax season, or they’ll present the option of purchasing a franchise from them. Tax preparers are always in short supply, so the more people they can hire on, the better. You can of course decline on both counts and walk away with a free education, which is what many people choose to do.

The other option is to do online classes. Online classes are very different from traditional courses, but they offer a lot more freedom. Classroom instruction usually begins later in the year around September or October, whereas with online classes you’re free to start and stop whenever you want. Starting earlier means you have more time to prepare for the March or April tax season. Online classes usually cost about $500 to complete.

With training under your belt, you’re pretty much free to do whatever you want. You can apply to work at companies like H&R Block, or you can work freely. We recommend practicing on your own tax forms and documents before offering services to others. Some states require that you become licensed before you can practice tax preparation legally in your state.

Contact the IRS to see what’s involved with getting a license in your state. Or if it’s your first year doing tax preparation, contact a local tax preparer and ask what’s involved with working for them. It’s a good way to get your license from them and gain experience at the same time.

How to Become a Social Worker

Social workers improve the quality of people’s live drastically and without someone looking to step up to the plate to make other people’s lives better, society would crash. Social workers don’t make very much in the way of salary, but for many the prospect of being able to help someone else is appealing in and of itself.

So, if you’re one of those people that wants to help others out in this world, keep reading. Below you will find all of the things you need and can do to become a professional social worker.

  • School: You’re going to want to start out by finding an accredited that’s approved by the CSWE, or the Council on Social Work Education. CSWE approved programs and schools will help you obtain an accredited degree that enables you to work in the field. No one is saying that kindness has to come from a degree, it’s just that having a degree from an accredited university opens many more opportunities for you and the CSWE ensures you have all of the skills you need to help people effectively. Your ultimate goal is to receive a bachelor’s degree in social working. After all of the coursework is done for the bachelor’s of social work degree, you are required by the CSWE to accrue a minimum of 400 hours in the field. This may mean getting an internship with another social worker, or working under the supervision of someone else.

  • Higher Learning: If you’re so inclined, there are master’s degrees available in the social work field. Spending the extra two years at school will get you a degree that will allow you to perform a lot more jobs. Different social working jobs require different training, and without a master’s degree you may not be able to do all of the social work you dreamed of. The minimum work experience for a master’s degree is 900 hours. This is 500 hours on top of the work experience you got for the bachelor’s degree.
  • Work Experience: If the amount of work experience to get a social work degree wasn’t enough, in order to be approved as a licensed social worker in your state, you must complete more work time. Each state differs in the number of hours required to become licensed, but it’s generally in the thousands. You can check the www.aswb.org website for more information about what’s required in your state to become licensed.
  • Final Exam: Once you’ve made it this far in your social work career, it’s time to jump the final hurdle. The final exam administered nationally by the ASWB as a way to test to make sure that new social workers are ready to handle the challenges in the world. The test is a multiple choice exam and before you’re allowed to take it, you must first get permission from your state of residency. Information about how to register for the test is also available on the ASWB website.

With all of that under your belt, you’re ready to face the world. Social workers make very good salary and because many work as a social worker for the love of helping people, the pay is an added bonus. Good luck!

How to Become a Real Estate Agent

People are always going to need a house to stay in, so becoming a real estate agent is investing in a long term career. Although there was a recent downturn in the economy and the housing market, it has to pick back up again and home sales will increase. Consider getting your real estate license before the market booms again and you’re left by the wayside while others rake in the cash.

Real estate can be a full time career or a part time job. However you choose to use your license, whether personally or as an employee of a real estate company, you’re sure to generate business. Becoming a real estate agent isn’t difficult, but it may be time consuming. Let’s take a look at what’s involved.

  • You’re going to want to first evaluate yourself before you go on a path of real estate. Real estate agents need to be friendly and personable and if you don’t’ think you’ll be able to handle the constant pressure of having to interact with clients looking to buy their dream home, stay away from the real estate business. Real estate is a tough game and unless you’re ready to brave the open market of other real estate agents fighting for property listings, you may want to consider another career. It may sound intense and over the top to call the real estate market a dangerous jungle, but that’s exactly what it is.
  • The real estate exam is the most important part of the entire process and will take the most time to get ready for. Real estate exams test would be realtors on all of the laws regarding real estate in the state you live in. There is no such thing as a national real estate license and anyone claiming to have one is lying. Every state that you wish to sell property I n requires a new real estate license and you will have to pass the exam every time. So, how do you prepare for the real estate exam in your state and get ready for the world after the exam?

  • Training courses have everything you need to know about real estate exams and the process. Training courses can cost a few hundred dollars but will prepare you in all aspects of real estate law to help prepare you for the exam. Colleges in your area more than likely hold real estate seminars once every few months, so check with them to see when their next seminar is. You’ll want to enroll in a course if you want any hope of passing the exam. The exam isn’t difficult; it just covers a lot of material that you have to be familiar with if you want a good passing grade.
  • Different agencies will administer the real estate exam and your real estate prep course should be able to guide you to the right place to take the test. Passage of the test will let you legally sell property in your state of residency.
  • With your license in hand, it’s time to try and find a job. Try contacting local real estate office to try and get on their team to help them sell homes. The more people they have on their team, the more money they can stand to make. Working for a company like REMAX to begin with, a national real estate giant, is a good way to get your feet wet with entry level properties. Once you have a few years of experience you can step it up to the big game and make bigger money.

How to Become a Private Investigator

Because there are no formal qualifications for becoming a private investigator, it’s tough to put a finger on what exactly it is you need to get the job done. Private investigators work for a number of agencies and sometimes themselves to gather information about a particular person or business. They put in long hours and are what could be considered freelance detectives. Their evidence gathering abilities must be top notch if they wish to succeed.

Instead of having a “How to” guide like we normally have here on Loosen, our guide on becoming a private investigator will be more of a tips list that you can follow to pursue your dreams of becoming a private eye.

  • If you have no detective skills, it’s time to get some. Try and enroll in a local detective school at a community college or at an independent study facility to hone your skills. Detective schools teach all of the basics of gathering information and evidence as well as how to properly document everything you find. Good detective skills are necessary for presenting your evidence to clients and courtrooms. You may find it tough to begin with to learn how to gather evidence, but in a few years it will be second nature.

  • Prior police experience is usually recommended for people looking to become private investigators. Police work not only gives you the experience you need with dealing with crime scenes, but also helps prepare you for some of the things you might deal with. There are many different situations that you will come across as a private investigator that you need to be able to deal with and if you’re squeamish or have no experience in the crime realm, some of the situations may be a little surprising. Police experience helps prepare you for these situations and gives you the knowledge you need to think critically and quickly.
  • Private investigators rely heavily on software in their job to run background checks on people. Familiarize yourself with the many different types of private investigation software on the market to help you get ready for the real thing. Credit check software and background check software are an integral part of the private investigation world and they’ll help you uncover all types of information about the people in question. One of the most popular pieces of software that’s used in the field is called Lexis-Nexis.

  • The only formal requirement for becoming a private investigator is licensing. While you don’t need a degree in private investigation, you may need a license to practice as a private eye in your state. Your local police office will be able to help you get certified. They’ll be able to tell you which offices you need to go through and what the minimum requirements are. There are no tests to get your license, but in many states you must complete ethics exams and background checks.
  • Working alone can get tedious for some private investigators. Many private eyes elect to work for a private investigation firm so that they can collaborate on cases. All of the information you collect on a case is confidential, but if you work in a firm you can collaborate on projects and pass information along to other qualified investigators. Working in a group is much easier than working alone.

5 Fun Science Fair Projects for Kids

So, science fair is coming around and you’re not sure what it is you’d like to do? With the Internet making it easier and easier to learn how to do fun and amazing projects, it’s no wonder that the competition is steeper every year for how awesome a science fair project can be.

Although there are plenty more options than the ones listed below, we’ve picked out our favorite science fair projects for kids to try out this year. They range in difficulty from things that you can do in an afternoon to things that will require the assistance of an adult.

Elementary School Science Projects for Kids

Count the Stars in the Sky

Before you get discouraged and think that counting all of the stars in the sky is an impossible goal, we think it’s wise to tell you that this is an elementary level project. Featured on a NASA science fair website, an experiment has been designed that can help you determine the number of stars that are in the sky. This project promotes observation of the night sky, as well as some basic mathematical calculations that will help students determine how many stars it is that they’re looking at through their homemade “telescope.” As a parent, you can encourage your little one to do these calculations independently and then go back to check their work when they’ve finished their project.

In addition to showing students how many stars there are in the sky, if you’d like to expand on the original project idea, you can also determine why stars “twinkle” the way they do. Although it isn’t an actual experiment, the website feature explains in detail that because the stars are so far away, we’re unable to see the atmosphere that surrounds the star. As the atmosphere moves around the bright spot, the differences in the amount of light that are given off will make it seem as though it’s blinking in the sky.

This experiment won’t require any special materials, meaning that you can perform the whole thing with just a few household items. The only item in the list that may be a bit difficult to come across is a protractor. These can be purchased for a few dollars at any grocery store or hobby shop.

Greenhouse Effect Experiment

With the climate changing so rapidly these days, it should make pretty good sense that a project about the greenhouse effect (the reason the earth is getting hotter and colder on a much more rapid basis) is the way to go. This project is perfect for kids in elementary school because it not only goes well beyond the traditional volcano science projects for kids in terms of practicality, but also gives kids a better understanding of the world around them by using a fun and interesting medium.

The general gist of this project is the act of building a small greenhouse (like the ones that are used to grow plants) to show that as carbon dioxide gas makes its way into the box, it has a much harder time making its way out. That increased density of gas keeps heat and moisture trapped inside of the box, ultimately raising the temperature. Just like the earth, whose atmosphere traps carbon dioxide in and ultimately energy, the box in this project will show exactly how the greenhouse effect works and how it can be catastrophic for the earth in the long run.

There’s quite a bit of hammering and building involved with this project, which is why it’s advised that a parent supervise the assembly of the greenhouse box that will be used in this experiment. The only materials you’ll have to run to the store to pick up are some safety goggles and probably a piece of plastic that will form the lid of your wooden box. In addition to being a bit tricky to assemble, there are also some terms that a student may not be familiar with. Big phrases such as climatology and geochemical may be foreign to a student, so if you’re assisting them with their science project, be sure to take the time to explain what these terms mean and how they’re relevant.

Fast Science Projects for Kids

Are you down to the wire on having to turn in a science fair project? Have no fear! We have two projects that are perfect for the students who do things at the last minute. These projects are by no means nobel prize winning experiments, but if you’re in a pinch and need something quick and easy that will get you a good grade, they should do the trick.

Bed of Nails

You’ve probably seen the trick done a thousand times on TV and maybe even a few times in person; Someone builds a bed of nails and lies down onto them all without getting injured or cut. The reason that no injuries are ever found is because of something known as surface area. By distributing your weight across a greater number of points, the amount of weight that’s placed on any one nail becomes increasingly smaller. This experiment is designed to show how exactly that trick works, while also unraveling the mystery of why no one ever gets hurt when they try it out for themselves.

This experiment isn’t designed to be done by a child. Instead, it’s highly advised that a parent assists with the project due to the nature of the supplies needed. In order to get started, you’ll need a few hundred nails and a big sheet of plywood to complete the entire project. Unlike other ideas for kids science projects, this one can be knocked out in an afternoon without much effort at all. You’ll need to read the entire guide to see how to properly assemble the piece of plywood with all of the nails, as well as how to show that the weight is distributed across multiple nails and not just a single one, but for a rushed project, this is definitely a good starting point for someone in a hurry.

Measuring Room Light

By the title, this project doesn’t sound all that exciting, but if you’re stuck for time, it’s a pretty easy project to pull off. In essence, the project’s goal is to show how rooms with bright colored paint or wallpaper on the walls are much better at illuminating a room than dark colored walls. The idea is that as light enters a dark colored room, much of the light is absorbed into the paint and not reflected back to the viewer. Walls that are white or something brightly colored do a better job at reflecting the light off of them and ultimately lighting the room more efficiently.

Unlike the previous project that required the help of a qualified adult, this project can be done with the help of just about anyone you know. The hardest part of this particular project is going to be finding a room that’s painted a bright color, as well as a room that has a darker color paint on the walls. If push comes to shove, you can buy dark colored quilts and sheets and pin them around the room to give the illusion that the walls are a dark color.

An important part of all light bulb oriented science projects is ensuring that no external light makes it into the room. Any extra light that comes in through windows or from other rooms will ultimately make for bad results. For this particular experiment, it’s important that only the light that you provide makes its way onto the walls. It may be hard to find a room with no windows or holes for light to come in, but if need be you can always hang a blanket or sheet over the window to prevent the light pollution.

You probably already have all of the supplies you need for this project in your house somewhere, so there’ll be no need to make an extra trip to the store and waste precious time you could be using to finish your quick and easy science fair project.

Science Fair Projects for Middle School Kids

Plant Growth with Recycled Water

If you live in the southern part of the United States, chances are you’ve smelled what’s come to be known as “recycled water.” For those unfamiliar with the term, in southern states the water reclamation facilities (where your sewage goes when it leaves your house) treat all of the water that comes in with chemicals to kill off bacteria. They then take that water and send it back out into the county to water plants and grass without using any new fresh water for the job.

It sounds great on paper because reclaimed water costs very little to produce, as the water already exists, and it provides a seemingly endless supply of water to nurture plants and grass throughout a city. However, some speculation has been raised as to whether or not this recycled water is actually good for the plants it’s landing on. This science fair project dives into the idea of how recycled water works and whether or not it has any effect on the growth of a plant.

Unlike the other projects listed above, this one will take a few weeks to conduct, as well as a bit of upfront cash to buy numerous identical plants.

If you’re wondering where you’re going to get recycled water from, don’t think that you’ll have to take a few scoops from the toilet the next time you’re finished using it. Instead, consider using water from a bathtub after someone has finished cleaning themselves, or using the water found in your sink after you’ve done the dishes.

This is a high school level project and shouldn’t require any adult supervision, other than maybe to make sure that no recycled water gets spilled in the house!

Building a Science Fair Board

In recent years, science fair project presentations have become very standardized, meaning you won’t have to hunt high and low for the perfect way to present a final project to the class. Unfortunately, although the materials have become easier to come by, some students simply don’t put the time and energy into making their board an A+ project. Below, we’ve outlined all of the standard information that you should include on your science project board to help better your chances at getting a great grade on the project.

Left Side of the Board

Question – First, you’re going to want to pose your question to the reader. This is different from the hypothesis, which is simply a prediction. Use this section to bring the reader to the same level as you and to help them understand why you chose this particular project.

Problem – If there’s a problem that you’re trying to solve, or if there’s something you’re trying to improve using a new methodology, outline the old problem or situation here.

Hypothesis – In the hypothesis section, you’ll make a prediction about the outcome of the experiment. In most cases, the sentence found in this section is begun with the phrase “My hypothesis is…” to make it clear to the reader what it is you think will happen.

Center of the Board

Data – Present all of the data you collected in the center of the board so that it’s the most prominent thing you see. You can organize your data with spreadsheets or in documents so that it can easily be scanned and the results found. Do your best to label everything in the data section, as anyone who comes up to look at your board should be able to see exactly what it was you did and what results you got.

Right Side of the Board

Procedure – Explain exactly how it is you did what you did. Make sure to be as detailed as possible, as the point of the procedures list is to give enough information so that someone who had no idea what your project was about would be able to replicate the experiment exactly.

Models – If you used any type of models or 3D replicas of your experiment, it’s good to take pictures of them and put them on the board. If you don’t have pictures of the model, or would like to bring the model in, it’s good practice to put the model in front of the display, as opposed to off to the side behind the board.

Research – All good science fair projects have research done for them. Include a short research paper about what you’ve found out about your particular project. Chances are, someone has done the exact same project as you before. See what it is they did in their experiment, how you can make yours better, and include any vital formulas and information that you found in your research.

Materials – In order to replicate an experiment, people need to know what it is you used to make your experiment. Be as detailed as possible. A good materials list will even include things like “paper to record the data.”

Conclusion – Finally, the conclusion section is for you to wrap up all of your findings in a short and easy to read section. Say whether your project was a success or failure and if there is anything you’d do differently.

Tip: As you’re going through your experiment, be sure to include plenty of pictures. Pictures help make a science fair board really pop off of the page and also give your readers a much better understanding of what it was you did for your project. Although the text is important, a few good photos can go a long way when trying to make an A+ board.

Good Science Fair Projects for Kids

While the jury may still be out on what the perfect science fair project is (hell, we still have science fairs every year to try and vote on the best looking and most captivating experiment), we think we have it whittled down to what makes a science fair project “good.”

First of all, a science project should be something that encourages learning. It’s all well and good to force your child to churn out some type of project for a grade, but putting that aside for a minute, we think that a project should be about something much more. If your child isn’t engaged or interested in what it is they’re learning about or experimenting with, it’s time to find a new project. Science fair projects are designed to be an interactive way for kids to explore their environments and learn something new about the world that they had no idea about before. By promoting independent learning, we can encourage our kids to discover something for themselves, as opposed to being handed something they may not be interested in.

Secondly, we know that it’s hard as parents to just let our kids wander off and do their own project all by themselves. We want them to succeed with their project boards and with the experiments they’re venturing into, which is why we shouldn’t jump in every few minutes to refine the experiment to our own specifications. By all means, make sure that your child isn’t using the chainsaw in the backyard to see how much bark can be shaved off of the average oak tree as an experiment, but make sure you don’t end up doing everything for your child. Just as in the first tip, letting your child perform the experiment independently without too much “adult supervision” is important to a child’s mental growth. Seeing how to properly perform an experiment may get them a B on their project board, but we think it’s a hell of a lot better than doing the entire project for your child and then getting upset when they abandon you in the garage to go watch TV instead.

Finally, a good science project is something that pushes the limits of a student’s mind. While we’ve listed a few good projects here in our article, many of them are designed to be done in elementary and middle school. We encourage you to take these as a jumping off point in your research. We’ve included some links at the bottom of the article for you to explore that will help you find some more project ideas of your own. These links have been around for a while. Even I, the author, remember using them on my own science fair projects years and years ago!

Talk to a Teacher

Before you commit to any one particular project, it’s always wise to talk to the science teacher who’ll be grading it. As much as we’d like to think that teachers are unbiased, the fact of the matter is that they rarely are. Science teachers always prefer certain projects to other ones for no other reason than “just because.” If you have a project in mind, try and run it by the teacher before you embark on the epic journey of collecting data and reporting about it on the board. Try and pick a project that you’re teacher will really love so that when it comes time to present the project in front of the class, or turn it in for a grade, you know that you’ll already have an upper hand for not only putting in the effort to talk to your teacher about the project before you set to work, but also for picking a topic that they liked and were ready to give a good grade to from the beginning!

A Book Recommendation

We generally don’t like including information about external products on our site, as we don’t want to give the impression that we’re trying to sell you something! However, in my years as a student, every time science fair rolled around, our teachers had books lying around the classroom that they recommended we read. They were packed full of science fair project ideas for us to choose from, and the kids who picked their ideas from these books generally got much better grades than those who simply made something up off of the top of their head.

A+ Science Fair Projects: One book in particular got the most attention in my middle school science classrooms, and it was called A+ Science Fair Projects. The book didn’t look too intimidating on the outside, but inside it was packed with great ideas, ranging from things you could do in a few hours to projects that took a few weeks to pull off. And although I didn’t care too much for science classes while I was in school, for some reason this book always got me inspired to pull off a great project every year (Sorry if that sounded a little too sales “pitchy,” I was simply reliving my days as a 7th grader)

How To Become a Trader

As a trader on Wall Street you can stand to make a lot of money. Becoming a trader means upgrading from your living room weekly stock checks to being a full time stock broker that trades on the markets every day for a living.

It’s a long road to learn all of the ins and outs of the stock market, but it’s a huge payoff in the end when you finally learn the tricks of the trade and can start making money for yourself on the markets.

Overview

When people say the word “trader,” they often mean “day trader.” “Day trading” is a term that means you trade stocks on the market every day and a lot of the time you’ll be buying and selling the same stock all within a day’s period. Day trading is a lot more difficult than regular trading where you know eventually almost everything will make money. Day trading requires focus and dedication to figure out which stocks will make you money in the same day and which ones won’t.

  • Firstly, you’re going to need a lot of experience with the markets. Try and study the markets as much as you can and study trends. There’s no shortcut to learning how the monster of the stock market works. You can take training programs online or read books to get the basics down, but it may take you a few years to really understand what’s going on.
  • It is recommended that before you take on any stock broker job or job on the market floor itself you should get an MBA. While you’re allowed to have any degree out there to trade stocks in your free time, to become a professional trader you must understand all of the business fundamentals there are and prove yourself to companies that you know what’s going on.
  • Once you have an MBA and a thorough understanding of the markets, you can apply for a job on Wall Street or with a brokerage firm. Chances are, when you start out in New York City working with a brokerage firm, you won’t be doing too much. You have to work your way up through a company to get to do anything worthwhile. If you stick around long enough you’ll get to know more and more people in the industry. It’s these connections that can propel you into the next level positions you’re after.

  • If you’re thinking of becoming a floor trader on the stock exchange, there’s not much to it. The same people you’ve been meeting for a while probably know people on the floor or are on the floor themselves. These people will help you break into floor trading if you’re interested. What most people don’t realize though is that many of the floor traders don’t make as much money as they would if they put their MBA to other uses. Because other positions usually pay a lot more than a floor trader, most people don’t bother to even try.

Does Drinking Water Help You Lose Weight?

I don’t know where this myth started, but hopefully it can be better explained in this article. While drinking water is very important to healthy bodily function, by itself it can’t actually help you lose any type of weight. Instead, it helps your body better metabolize fat, which in turn helps you shed those extra pounds.

I’ve done my best to explain why the water myth exists and why it’s thought that it can help you lose weight, as well as give you some reasons why drinking plenty of water during the day is important if you’re a workout junkie like myself. So, let’s jump straight into it.
